Gainesville Health & Fitness Centers' registered dietitian Amber Wilhoit recommends safe and healthy holiday eating. 'Tis the season to ...

1. Be cautious. Remember food safety during this holiday season. Don't leave food sitting out. You don't want your loved ones getting sick. Tip: Clear out the refrigerator to make room before hosting a Thanksgiving meal.

2. Be sure to eat breakfast. Often, people make the mistake of skipping breakfast on Thanksgiving Day. "They want to save up for the big meal," said Wilhoit. Eliminating breakfast will set you up for overeating.

3. Be active. Take a brisk walk afterwards, rather than taking a nap. Ingredients such as tryptophan in turkey mixed with a big meal can make you tired. The best way to combat these effects is to walk it off.

4. Cover your plate with veggies. A good thing about Thanksgiving is all of the homemade vegetable dishes, said Wilhoit. The more veggies that cover your plate, the less room for carbohydrates.

5. Enjoy. Indulge for the day. Overeating one day won't break your diet plan. After the holiday, return back to your regular eating and exercise habits.
