Imagine a Workforce...

Imagine a Workforce

Imagine a Workforce that’s physically energized, emotionally connected, and mentally focused. Introducing our Corporate Wellness Partnership.

We know successful leaders look at their employees as an investment. Top organizations spend a great deal of time and money to help them improve their knowledge and skills.

There is another element that truly great organizations have and that is finding ways to help employees improve all aspects of their lives. Let’s face it, most of us spend the majority of our lives at work. If a company can create an atmosphere of optimism and an overall enjoyment for such a large part of their employees’ lives, it can’t help but make an organization better.

As a company, the goal of Gainesville Health and Fitness has been to improve the lives of our employees, our members, and the entire community. And this is what we work on every day. To say that we believe the health of our community is based on the health of the people who work here is an understatement. We have seen the lives of thousands of people change as their overall health and fitness has improved. Physical changes are obvious, but what is also obvious is the change in their energy, confidence and overall mental attitude.

That’s why a number of years ago we set out to accomplish our mission of making Gainesville the healthiest community in America. As many of you know that mission was accomplished when we were designated the healthiest community in America by the Wellness Council of America - an achievement no other community has received to date. That doesn’t mean, however, that the quest doesn’t continue to make us an even healthier community. In fact, we changed our mission to read: To KEEP Gainesville the healthiest community in America.

When organizations support a healthier workforce every aspect of the business improves too. People become more productive, work harder, focus more, have far fewer sick days and health claims, and stay with companies longer.

We invite your business to partner with us and enhance the health of our employees, our businesses, and our community.

7 Steps to a Healthier Workforce

America’s healthiest companies have followed seven key benchmarks of success to provide a structure or blue print to help their organizations build results-oriented wellness programs. Ultimately these programs help employees make better lifestyle choices, and positively impact the organization’s bottom line.

1. Get the support of your CEO/President
From our experience, CEO support is essential to the process of developing best-in-class programs. Indeed, we know of very few programs that have contained costs and improved employee health that don’t have strong senior level support.

2. Put together a wellness team
After senior level support is established, the next task is to create a cohesive wellness team. Teams are essential to building great wellness programs because they help to distribute the responsibility for wellness throughout the organization.

3. Collect data to determine the best programs to offer
The team’s first and primary responsibility is not to start offering programs, but rather to step back and gather important data. The data will be collected using corporate culture audits, health risk appraisals, and knowledge and interest surveys. This data is extremely important because it will reveal the specific areas of health needs and interests within the organization.

4. Write the goals/objectives
The taskis now to develop an operating plan for health and wellness within the organization. This operating plan will serve as the roadmap and will guide the company’s efforts and investments in workplace wellness.

With the first four benchmarks completed, it is now appropriate to begin choosing and implementing the appropriate health and productivity interventions. These interventions will most likely include tobacco cessation, physical activity, weight management, self-care, and stress management. But, they also may include things like fatigue management and ergonomics—depending on what the company’s data reveals.

6. Create a supportive environment
Once the appropriate health promoting interventions are up and running, it’s time to create a supportive environment. Indeed, by having a supportive environment, organizations can be confident that employees will be supported in their efforts to lead healthier lives. Environmental interventions may take the form of policies, physical modifications, and rewards and incentives.

7. EVALUATE!
The seventh and final benchmark is carefully evaluating outcomes. It is within this benchmark that companies will religiously keep score when it comes to their wellness program. Evaluation targets include things like participation, participant satisfaction, behavior modification, and cost containment.

These benchmarks were created by the Wellness Councils of America (welcoa.org), is a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting healthier life styles for all Americans, especially through health promotion initiatives at the worksite.

Needs Assessment

Let's take a closer look to determine what drives up health care costs. 80% of health care cost increases are drive by 20% of employees.
