What is HYROX?
HYROX is a global fitness race that combines running with functional strength work. Every race follows the same format worldwide: you run 1 kilometer, complete one workout station, and repeat that sequence eight times. The stations include sled pushes, rowing, farmer's carries, and wall balls. Because the format never changes, you can train for it precisely, benchmark your progress, and compare your times against athletes anywhere in the world. HYROX calls itself the World Series of Fitness Racing, and with hundreds of thousands of participants each year, it has become one of the fastest growing fitness events in the world.
Where can I train for HYROX in Gainesville?
Gainesville Health & Fitness Main is an official HYROX Training Club, the designation HYROX gives to affiliated gyms with access to official programming, coach education, and race preparation resources. HYROX classes at GHF are led by current Hyrox Pro Athlete, AJ Smith, NASM-CPT, trained through the HYROX Performance Hub and use the same movements, distances, and pacing strategies you'll encounter at a race.
Do I need a GHF membership to take HYROX classes?
No. HYROX classes at GHF Main are open to both members and non-members, and class pricing is separate from membership. Right now you can try a class at our intro rate of $10 per class, available through August 31, 2026. [Link to schedule/registration]
Is HYROX good for beginners?
Yes, and this surprises most people. The movements in HYROX are deliberately basic. There are no barbell lifts, no gymnastics, and nothing that requires months of technique work before you can participate. If you can jog and do a squat, you can start training. The challenge is conditioning, not skill, which is exactly what our classes build week over week. Many first-timers also enter races in the Doubles division, where two athletes split the station work, making the distance far more approachable.
What are the 8 HYROX stations?
In race order: 1,000m SkiErg, 50m sled push, 50m sled pull, 80m burpee broad jumps, 1,000m row, 200m farmer's carry, 100m sandbag lunges, and 100 wall balls (75 for women in the Open division). Each station is preceded by a 1km run. Our classes at GHF Main rotate through all eight stations so nothing on race day is unfamiliar.
How is HYROX different from CrossFit?
CrossFit workouts vary daily and include technical movements like Olympic lifts and gymnastics. HYROX is the same event every time, built from simple functional movements plus a heavy dose of running. Roughly half of a HYROX race is running, which is why it attracts runners who want strength and lifters who want endurance. The two complement each other well, and many athletes at GHF train in both.
Do I need to be a runner to do HYROX?
You need to be able to run, but you don't need to be fast. About 50 percent of race time is spent running, so our classes train what HYROX athletes call compromised running, which means running on tired legs after strength work. If you can currently jog a mile without stopping, you have enough of a base to start. The rest is built in training.
How long does it take to train for a HYROX race?
Most athletes need 8 to 12 weeks of structured training for their first race, longer if you're starting from a low fitness base. The nearest race to Gainesville is HYROX Tampa, October 23 to 25, 2026, at the Tampa Convention Center. Counting backward, athletes targeting Tampa should be in consistent training by early August, which makes right now the ideal time to start.
How long does a HYROX race take to finish?
The average finisher completes the race in about 90 minutes, and there is no time limit. Elite athletes finish in under an hour, while first-timers commonly take up to two hours. The format rewards steady pacing over raw speed, which is a big part of why it's so beginner friendly.
What should I wear to a HYROX class?
Comfortable training clothes and running shoes. Because HYROX involves as much running as lifting, running shoes generally work better than flat lifting shoes. Bring a water bottle and a towel. Everything else, including sleds, SkiErgs, rowers, sandbags, and wall balls, is provided.
Does GHF host HYROX race simulations?
Yes. GHF periodically hosts the GHF HYROX Simulation, an in-house event where you complete the full race format with timing, right here in Gainesville. These simulations are training events hosted by GHF and are not official HYROX competitions, but they're the single best way to experience race pacing before you register for the real thing.
